When Politics Becomes an Idol
A politician can become an idol just as easily as a golden calf.
This blog deals with the idolization of former President Donald Trump and the unhealthy obsession that developed among some of his supporters.
ALONE with scores of other prophets, Jeremiah Johnson prophesied that Donald Trump would have a two-term presidency. Paralleling Trump to the biblical King Cyrus, many right-wing evangelicals believed he had a divine destiny to set America on the right path by strengthening the economy, aligning with Israel by placing the American embassy in Jerusalem, securing the borders from aliens, and overturning legalized abortion, among other issues. As an underdog during the 2016 primary, Trump brought his usual irreverent, bombastic humor to the podium, causing many right-wing conservatives to cringe as they desperately tried to make him look like a “saint,” only to see him emerge as the winner. During the traditional first dance at the inaugural ball, President Trump swayed across the floor with his lovely wife, Melania, to Frank Sinatra’s iconic song, My Way. Now that was prophetic. Some right-wing prophets claimed to have received direct visitations from heaven concerning the upcoming elections.
“I see the future, Donald Trump two years and Mike Pence for two years,” one prophet proclaimed.
“The chosen one” became the mantra of many, and Donald Trump was lifted to a place of idolatry. Trump’s White House trade adviser Peter Navarro once said concerning Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, “There’s a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump.” Though he later apologized, the statement illustrated the intensity of devotion surrounding Trump among some of his supporters. To them, Republicans were angelic, and Democrats were of the devil. If you voted toward the right, you were considered a true Christian, but if you voted Democrat, you were on your way to hell in a handbasket.
It does not take much discernment to recognize that this group had fallen into dangerous territory. When salvation becomes tied to political allegiance instead of the Blood of Jesus Christ, error is already at the door. Interestingly, Jesus had little to say about the Roman government during His earthly ministry. His mission was not to establish a political party but to establish the Kingdom of God. Trump lost his 2020 bid, leaving scores astonished and claiming that the election had been stolen and that God would overturn the decision. Some asserted that America had two presidents, while others refused to acknowledge Biden as the president-elect.
On January 6, 2021, only hours before Vice President Mike Pence certified the electoral votes, an enraged mob broke through barriers, attacked security, and ransacked the Capitol. People died, the nation suffered tremendous embarrassment, and America's political divisions deepened. The events surrounding January 6 revealed something that should concern every believer: when political devotion becomes stronger than our devotion to Christ, we are standing on dangerous ground.
Jeremiah Johnson eventually produced a three-part online apology,(no longer available), confessing that his prophecy had been wrong. His confession stirred an avalanche of persecution and vitriol. Death threats, betrayal, rejection, mockery, and financial ruin followed, leaving him shattered. While dismounting the pulpit after giving his testimony at a church one evening, Prophet Johnson was confronted by a compassionate group who asked to pray for him. Deliverance reportedly erupted, and as he began to purge, spirits of witchcraft were cast out. Johnson later described awakening in his hotel room the next morning feeling weightlessly refreshed and renewed. The slanders and accusations proceeded not from the mouths of drug dealers, gangbangers, or street walkers, but from professing Christians who viciously attacked anyone who did not stand with them in their political convictions. This is witchcraft proceeding from the pews—manipulation masquerading as righteousness, control disguised as zeal, and political devotion elevated above devotion to Christ.
The danger is not simply that Christians may support the wrong politician. The deeper danger is that we can become so emotionally attached to a political leader, party, movement, or ideology that we begin defending it more passionately than we defend the truth of God's Word. A politician may occupy the White House, but only Christ should occupy the throne of our hearts.

The church’s greatest danger is not merely false prophecy—it is misplaced worship.
When we crown a politician higher than the Savior, we have already crossed a spiritual line.
Let us examine our hearts.
Who has our loyalty?
Who has our allegiance?
Who receives our praise?
Who do we defend when challenged?
And, most importantly...
Who sits on the throne?
Jesus Christ must never become second to Caesar.
